The Pmod DPOT is a digital potentiometer that uses Analog Devices' AD5160 to set a desired resistance between two terminals. The device has 256 possible step values, allowing for a resistance between 60 ohm and 9961 ohm to be programmed. The wiper terminal has an internal resistance of 60 ohm.
The Pmod DPOT communicates with the host board via Digilent's Interface Type 2 Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Users can provide 8-bits of data on the falling Serial Clock (SCLK) edge in SPI Mode 0 by bringing the Chip Select (CS) line low. Once the 8 bits of data have been transferred, the rising edge of the CS line loads the data into the internal register DAC, whereupon the resistance between terminals is set.
The Pmod DPOT can be used in two different styles: a rheostat mode where users set a desired resistance between one outside terminal and the wiper terminal, or in a voltage divider mode where the two outside terminals are powered at set voltages and a ratio of resistance is specified.
Pmod Series Overview
The Digilent Pmod (peripheral module) Series is a small, low-cost peripheral module that can be used with a wide range of embedded systems and development boards. It is designed to extend the capabilities of embedded systems and development boards by adding new features and functionality. The Pmod communicates with host boards using 6, 8 or 12-pin connectors that can carry multiple digital control signals, taking advantage of standard serial protocols such as SPI and I²C. This allows for more effective designs by routing analog signals and power supplies only where they are needed and away from digital controller boards.
